Gastropexy

A procedure to prevent GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus).

A Gastropexy is a procedure to prevent GDV. During this procedure, your veterinarian will surgically "tack" the stomach to the right side of the body wall. This holds the stomach in place, preventing it from making the twist that results in GDV.

What Is GDV?

GDV is a life threatening condition, most commonly observed in deep-chested, large breed dogs. With GDV, the stomach becomes dilated with gas and/or fluid, and becomes twisted on itself. This causes the gas and/or fluid from naturally releasing. With the rise of pressure within the stomach as a result, affected pets will experience decreasing blood flow to the stomach tissues. In some cases, the spleen can also become twisted with the stomach, and have its blood supply compromised as well. Disruptions in blood supply can lead to death (necrosis) of the gastrointestinal tract and spleen, while also having significant effects on blood pressure & overall health. Without emergency treatment, GDV is fatal.

When Should A Gastropexy Be Performed?

Gastropexy procedures are generally recommended for candidate dogs during their spay & neuter procedures, however a gastropexy may be performed on any qualifying pet who is older than 6 months of age.
